Movie Making Mompreneurs

There’s a little ballerina in most girls ages 3 to 7 years old and the desire to be a fairy princess, which is what prompted two New Jersey moms to write, direct and design a DVD series called Prima Princessa featuring 40 minute DVD’s with live demonstrations of ballet steps.

The series, released a year ago,  is built around a cartoon fairy ballerina named Prima Princessa who encourages her young audience of  tutu-clad preschoolers to “get up and dance” in between excerpts from professional productions.  Prima Princessa Presents the Nutcracker, featuring the world famous San Francisco Ballet, is the latest DVD in the ballet series created by these moms.

The first DVD called Prima Princessa presents Swan Lake features The Paris Opera Ballet and is narrated for kids by the fairy princess herself.  The DVD series are priced right at $12.99 each.

I had a chance to meet the two moms earlier this summer at a New York City media event where they gave me a copy of Prima Princessa presents Swan Lake which I will pass on to one of my readers since my two princesses are now grown.

The company, Prima Princessa Productions LLC, created and founded by Stephanie Troeller and Mary Kate Mellow, two stay at home moms with six young children between them,  hit the market with wings and has youngsters twirling in their tutu’s  across the world.

Stephanie brought her background as a young ballet dancer along with her 15 years of cartooning and combined it with Mary Kate’s business experience where she propelled her self created jewelry line from craft fairs to mainstream.  Together the two Mompreneurs created their own “fantasy come true” story with their animated princess fairy ballet DVD’s.

If you have  little ones that need some motivation to move or a little princess who fancies herself a ballerina, this series, which can be done right in the comfort of your own television room, will have them dancing along and learning some primary ballet steps with Prima Princessa in between acts of   professional productions.

This ballet DVD would be a great way to entertain little girls (and some boys too) during a Princess themed birthday party where all the little party people don a ballet costume  or tiara and watch professional ballet before trying some moves of their own.  The screener copy I watched taught the beginner  ballet move, Passe, to the little ones who scrambled to be on their toes emulating students from New York City Ballet’s official academy, School of American Ballet.

Mary Kate, the mom of two, says that “parents are loving Prima Princessa just like the kids do”.  Her indie filmmaker partner, Stephanie says, “As moms we know what kids want and we know what kids need, and our goal is to inspire them to get up and dance, to learn and to have fun too.”  Stephanie is the mother of four young children.

Not only do they understand kids, but they understand the world of film making as their Prima Princessa Productions, LLC signed two major distribution deals in June that will have little dancers moving their feet in both Australia and New Zealand.  There is a Japanese language release of Prima Princessa  and a book deal with Imagine Publishing Inc., both of which reach little princesses around the world.
